Government Plans Agricultural Innovation Hub at Parke Agrario Sint Joris

WILLEMSTAD – The Curaçao government wants to transform Parke Agrario Sint Joris into a modern agricultural development and innovation center as part of broader efforts to strengthen local food production and reduce dependence on imported food.

The plans were discussed Wednesday during a presentation by the Ministry of Economic Development to the Council of Ministers focusing on food security and the future of Curaçao’s agricultural sector.

According to the government, the Sint Joris area is expected to play a central role in the island’s agricultural modernization strategy.

Historically, the region around Sint Joris has been considered one of Curaçao’s more favorable agricultural zones because of its relatively fertile soil and the presence of groundwater. In the past, farmers cultivated fruits, vegetables, and citrus products in the area.

Recent policy documents and presentations now envision Sint Joris becoming a practical center for agricultural innovation and knowledge-sharing.

Government officials indicated that future projects could include modern irrigation systems, hydroponic farming, and a reverse-osmosis installation for water production. Authorities are also considering training programs for farmers, pilot projects, and new forms of cooperation in storage and distribution.

The government further hopes to develop the area into a broader knowledge and innovation center where agricultural training, technology, and production can be combined.

The initiative forms part of Curaçao’s long-term ambition to professionalize and modernize the agricultural sector through greater use of technology and sustainable production methods.

Officials say these efforts are increasingly necessary because Curaçao remains heavily dependent on imported food and therefore vulnerable to rising international food prices, supply chain disruptions, and transportation costs.

The presentation also highlighted growing investor interest in local agricultural development, although no financial figures or timelines have yet been publicly announced.
