WILLEMSTAD – The Curaçao government has taken the next step toward introducing a mandatory basic pension system after the Council of Ministers approved the submission of an initiative draft national ordinance to the Council of Advice for review.
The proposal, submitted by the Ministry of Social Development, Labor and Welfare (SOAW), will be sent through the Governor to the Council of Advice, which will examine the draft legislation and issue its formal recommendation before the process can continue.
The initiative aims to create a legal framework for a mandatory basic pension arrangement in Curaçao, establishing clearer rules and protections regarding basic income support for residents after retirement.
The government has not yet released further details about the proposed system, including eligibility requirements, financing mechanisms or the expected impact on existing pension arrangements.
Once the Council of Advice completes its review, the proposal can move forward through the legislative process, which includes possible consideration and approval by the Curaçao Parliament.
The introduction of a mandatory basic pension has been a recurring topic in discussions about social security and financial security for elderly residents. Supporters argue that a stronger basic pension framework is needed to ensure that residents can maintain a dignified standard of living after retirement.
The Council of Advice’s review will provide the first formal legal assessment of the proposed legislation before the government decides on the next steps.
