WILLEMSTAD – The Government of Curaçao sees artificial intelligence (AI) as an important opportunity to strengthen the economy, improve public services and prepare the island for the future workforce.
As part of the development of the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, the government will consult with stakeholders from education, science, business, civil society and the public sector to determine how AI can best be integrated into Curaçao’s development.
According to the government, artificial intelligence could contribute to several key areas, including economic growth, healthcare, education and government services.
AI applications could help make public services more efficient and accessible, improve healthcare delivery and provide young people with better preparation for the future labor market.
At the same time, the government stressed that innovation must go hand in hand with responsibility. Privacy protection, cybersecurity, transparency and ethical use of artificial intelligence will be central elements of the national strategy.
The Regulatory Authority of Curaçao (RAC) has been tasked with coordinating the strategy and ensuring that different sectors have a voice in the process.
The government stated that international knowledge and guidelines will serve as important references, including recommendations from UNESCO. However, Curaçao’s AI policy will be tailored specifically to the island’s own challenges and opportunities.
Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport Sithree van Heydoorn emphasized that broad participation is essential for the success of the initiative.
He encouraged organizations, experts and citizens involved in technology and innovation to contribute ideas and perspectives during the consultation process.
The government hopes that the consultations will lead to a strong National AI Strategy that allows Curaçao to benefit from technological progress while protecting the interests and rights of its citizens.
“AI should serve society and contribute to a more innovative, inclusive and sustainable Curaçao,” the government stated.
