Government grants funding to Alzheimer Foundation as aging population drives demand for care

Local, Health, | By Press release May 6, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – The government of Curaçao has approved a financial contribution to support Alzheimer care on the island, as concerns grow over the rising number of dementia cases linked to an aging population.

MFK Member of Parliament Ramón Yung announced that the Pisas III cabinet has granted a one-time subsidy of 36,000 guilders to the Fundashon Alzheimer Curaçao, following a motion submitted during the 2026 budget discussions.

According to Yung, the funding fulfills a request by the MFK parliamentary faction to support the foundation’s work in educating the public and assisting families dealing with Alzheimer’s disease.

Curaçao has seen a steady increase in its elderly population in recent years, a development that is directly contributing to a rise in dementia-related conditions.

For more than 26 years, Fundashon Alzheimer Curaçao has been providing services on a largely volunteer basis, offering information sessions, community meetings and practical guidance for caregivers.

The organization plays a key role in helping families better understand the disease and manage the daily challenges of caring for individuals with Alzheimer’s.

Minister of Health, Environment and Nature Tyron Boekhoudt was credited for implementing the subsidy, which the government says is intended to strengthen the foundation’s capacity to continue its work.

During an information session held at the Brievengat community center, foundation president Chanerika Hellement expressed gratitude for the financial support.

She said the funding will provide an important boost, enabling the organization to continue and expand its activities.

The MFK faction welcomed the decision, describing it as recognition of the foundation’s long-standing contribution to the community.

The subsidy comes amid broader discussions about the impact of aging on Curaçao’s healthcare system, as demand for elderly care and specialized support services continues to grow.

Officials say initiatives like this are essential to help communities cope with the social and medical challenges associated with demographic change.
