Government Defends Higher Penalties for Crimes Against Tourists

| By Correspondent March 17, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – The government of Curaçao is defending proposed legislation that would introduce harsher penalties for crimes committed against tourists.

The measure, which has drawn questions from several political parties, aims to protect the island’s tourism sector, a key pillar of the economy.

According to the government, crimes targeting visitors have broader economic consequences than similar offenses against residents. As such, increasing penalties is seen as a justified step to safeguard national economic interests.

Critics have raised concerns about potential inequality, arguing that other vulnerable groups should receive similar legal protection. However, authorities maintain that the distinction is based on the economic importance of tourism.

The proposal aligns with similar measures in other parts of the Kingdom and is intended to deter criminal activity that could harm Curaçao’s international reputation.
