WILLEMSTAD – The Ministry of Health, Environment and Nature (GMN) in Curaçao says it is investigating a series of unusual cases involving local birds that were found unable to fly.

The ministry responded this week after concerns were raised publicly by resident Stanley Ignacio, who reported several incidents involving birds that had suddenly lost the ability to fly properly and remained on the ground.
Following the reports, GMN activated several departments, including Veterinary Affairs, Nature and Environmental Management (MNB), and its communications division, to assess the situation and coordinate a response.

During consultations with Ignacio, additional details were provided about the affected birds. According to the ministry, three birds of prey were identified in separate cases where they were unable to fly and remained grounded.
The affected species include the Crested Caracara, the American Kestrel, and the Owl.
Ignacio indicated that, in most of the cases, the birds appeared to be in otherwise good physical condition, making the situation more unusual.

The birds were reportedly found in several areas across the island, including Skalo, Mari Pampun, Kurá Piedra, and Nieuwehaven.
GMN is now asking the public to report any similar cases to Animal Welfare Inspector Kanavan at +5999 6670163. The ministry says gathering more reports will help authorities identify the cause of the phenomenon and determine whether there is an underlying environmental or health-related issue affecting local wildlife.
Officials emphasized that the ministry will continue to monitor the situation closely as part of its responsibility to protect both public health and Curaçao’s natural environment.
