WILLEMSTAD – Fundashon E Hende has raised concerns about fees allegedly collected by Fundashon Kas Popular (FKP) from tenants and buyers of social housing without a sufficient legal basis.
The allegations form part of a broader request submitted by the foundation to the Curaçao Parliament for an investigation into FKP’s financial and administrative practices.
According to Fundashon E Hende, FKP has collected various amounts from residents, including ground lease fees, usage taxes, administrative costs, estimated notary expenses and insurance premiums, despite questions about whether these charges were legally justified.
The foundation claims that the Tax Receiver confirmed that some buyers were not required to pay usage taxes or ground lease fees because the properties and land had not yet legally been transferred into their names.
Fundashon E Hende alleges that some of these collected amounts did not flow into the national treasury, raising additional questions about financial accountability.
The organization also questions the calculation of administrative fees and interest charges applied during the sale of social housing units.
Another concern raised by the foundation involves the way homes are advertised, including the use of Facebook to offer available housing and the amount of personal information requested from families applying for homes.
Fundashon E Hende argues that these practices require greater transparency, especially given the shortage of affordable housing on the island.
The foundation estimates that more than 8,000 people are currently waiting for social housing, while construction of new homes remains insufficient and many existing units require maintenance.
The organization is urging Parliament to investigate FKP’s operations and determine whether corrective or political measures are necessary if violations of laws or regulations are found.
