WILLEMSTAD – Motorists in Curaçao will pay more for gasoline and diesel starting September 1, with diesel drivers facing the sharpest increase as international fuel purchasing costs continue to rise.
The price of gasoline will increase from just over ANG 2.54 to nearly ANG 2.60 per liter. This represents an increase of almost six cents per liter, or approximately 2.2 percent.
Diesel will become considerably more expensive. The price will rise from just over ANG 2.13 to more than ANG 2.37 per liter, an increase of almost 24 cents, or more than 11 percent.
According to the government, the higher prices are primarily the result of increases in international purchasing costs. Diesel prices in particular have risen sharply internationally, partly because of limited global refining capacity.
The government is using an available surplus within the diesel price structure this month to soften the impact of the international increase on consumers.
However, that financial buffer is expected to be fully depleted by the end of September.
This means diesel prices could face renewed upward pressure in the following months if international market conditions remain unfavorable.
The government also pointed to continuing geopolitical tensions as a source of uncertainty for international energy markets.
The September increase will affect not only private motorists but could also put additional pressure on businesses and sectors that depend heavily on diesel, particularly transportation and other commercial activities with significant fuel consumption.
