WILLEMSTAD - Esports organisation Fuego, founded in Curaçao, has qualified for the World Star Challengers Invitational in South Korea, the world tournament in League of Legends, developed and published by Riot Games. On Wednesday the team beat Argentina’s 9Z 3-0 in the play-off for Latin America’s only spot, making Fuego officially the best team in the region.
Sixteen champions from China, Korea, Asia, Europe and the Americas will compete for the title from 20 September to 2 October. League of Legends is the biggest esport in the world, and South Korea is widely seen as the home of the game.
Fuego was founded by Jeff Macalonie, yu di Kòrsou, and fields its team from Colombia. Earlier this month the organisation won the Liga Regional Norte for the fourth time, the league covering Mexico, Central America and the north of South America.
Fuego has partnered with the Curaçao Tourist Board since 2022. The team wears the Curaçao name on its jersey and uses gaming and entertainment to put the island in front of a young, international audience.
The qualification is another win for Curaçao in what is already a remarkable year for sport. Matches can be followed live on the official channels of Riot Games.
