Four Convicted in Curaçao Cocaine-by-Mail Smuggling Scheme

WILLEMSTAD – The Court of First Instance has sentenced three European Dutch nationals and one Curaçaoan in a drug-smuggling operation that used tourists traveling from the Netherlands to send packages containing cocaine back to Dutch addresses through the postal system.

The investigation began after Curaçao Customs and detectives noticed a striking increase in the number of postal packages being sent by Dutch tourists.

According to the case, the organization arranged for vacationers from the Netherlands to travel to Curaçao. While on the island, packages containing cocaine were prepared and subsequently mailed to the travelers’ own home addresses in the Netherlands.

Several suspects were prosecuted for their involvement in the operation. Although the defendants exercised their right to remain silent during the court proceedings, the judge concluded that the evidence presented was sufficient to impose prison sentences.

Yfke H., against whom prosecutors had requested a 50-month prison sentence, was sentenced to 40 months.

Daniel H. received a 32-month prison sentence, two months more than the 30 months requested by the prosecution.

Wesley van O. was sentenced to 26 months in prison. Prosecutors had sought a 40-month sentence in his case.

The case involved defendants aged 26 and 40, among others, with sentences reaching more than three years.

The investigation was triggered by the unusual pattern detected in outgoing mail. The increase in packages sent by Dutch visitors drew the attention of Customs and investigators and ultimately led authorities to uncover the cocaine-smuggling operation.

The convictions demonstrate how traffickers sought to use ordinary tourist travel and the postal system to move cocaine from Curaçao to the Netherlands while attempting to disguise the shipments as regular packages sent home by vacationers.
