Former SEHOS Could Become Recovery-Care Center as Curaçao Plans Healthcare District Around CMC

Local, Health, | By Correspondent October 5, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Part of the former Sint Elisabeth Hospital could be given a new healthcare function as Curaçao considers developing a broader healthcare district surrounding the Curaçao Medical Center.

The possibility emerged following the acquisition of the former SEHOS complex by the Government of Curaçao and CMC Vastgoed.

One of the first uses under consideration is recovery care for patients who are medically ready to leave the hospital but are not yet able to return home.

Such patients could temporarily receive nursing care, supervision and assistance at the former SEHOS site rather than continuing to occupy a hospital bed or being discharged to a home environment where adequate care may not yet be available.

The number of places required and the way the service would be organized are still being studied.

According to the government, the results could eventually lead to a broader care model connecting prevention, medical treatment, recovery and longer-term support.

The redevelopment is being considered in conjunction with CMC’s plans for its future healthcare model. The proximity of the old SEHOS buildings to the current hospital makes the complex strategically important for that purpose.

The government is also incorporating elements of the “Blue Zone” concept into its vision for the area. The objective would be to create surroundings that encourage healthier lifestyles, including safe walking routes, shade, greenery and places where people can meet and interact.

Healthcare, however, will not be the exclusive function of the former hospital grounds.

The broader redevelopment vision combines care with housing, businesses, recreation, heritage and community activities, with the intention of integrating the property into Otrobanda rather than developing it as a closed medical campus.

The government and CMC Vastgoed each financed their own portion of the acquisition.

CMC Vastgoed stressed that the funds it used to purchase its share of the property are separate from the budget used for maintenance and preservation of the Curaçao Medical Center.

Further studies will determine what portion of the former SEHOS complex could ultimately be used for recovery care and how that service would fit into the broader healthcare system.
