Former MP Menki Rojer Says MFK Risks “Political Suicide” After Javier Silvania Rejection

WILLEMSTAD – Former Member of Parliament Menki Rojer has sharply criticized the internal election results within ruling party MFK, arguing that the rejection of Finance Minister Javier Silvania by the party membership could seriously damage the party politically.

In a lengthy opinion and commentary on the recent MFK leadership election, Rojer described the outcome as difficult to understand given Silvania’s popularity among voters during the last parliamentary elections.

According to Rojer, Silvania was one of the party’s strongest electoral figures and helped bring approximately 18,000 votes to MFK during the elections, making him one of the island’s most influential politicians.

Rojer argued that despite that electoral strength, Silvania now appears increasingly isolated within sections of the party structure.

The former parliamentarian questioned how a politician who delivered such major electoral support to MFK could fail to secure a leadership position within the party organization.

Rojer also pointed to Silvania’s central role as Minister of Finance, describing the ministry as one of the most important portfolios within the current government coalition.

According to him, the internal developments surrounding Silvania have created confusion among both party supporters and the broader public.

During his commentary, Rojer suggested that tensions inside MFK may reflect deeper divisions between electoral popularity and internal party dynamics.

He stated that in many political systems, a figure capable of attracting such large personal support would normally be elevated within party leadership rather than sidelined.

Rojer warned that failing to recognize Silvania’s political weight could amount to what he described as “political suicide” for the party.

At the same time, he acknowledged that Silvania himself has repeatedly stated publicly that he remains loyal to MFK despite speculation and calls from some political observers for him to distance himself from the party or continue independently in Parliament.

Rojer also suggested that the situation could create uncertainty about the future balance of power within MFK, especially given Silvania’s strong public profile and voter base.

The comments come amid growing political discussion following MFK’s recent internal elections, where businessman Ramon Yung was elected as the party’s new president for the 2026-2028 period.

So far, neither MFK leadership nor Minister Javier Silvania has publicly responded to Rojer’s remarks.
