WILLEMSTAD – Former Curaçao Parliament member Anthony Godett has taken on a new role as strategic advisor at the Ministry of Economic Development, where he is supporting Minister Roderick Middelhof on key policy areas including the economy and tourism.

Godett, who began his advisory role last month, said he is focusing on broad policy issues. “I advise the minister on all areas,” he stated, noting that topics such as basic services and the development of the tourism sector have already been discussed.

He expressed confidence in Minister Middelhof’s leadership, describing his approach as thoughtful and decisive. “He listens, analyzes, and makes decisions. I believe he will do a good job,” Godett said.

According to Godett, the ministry plans to place greater emphasis in the coming period on the role of cooperatives within the economy, with efforts aimed at increasing public awareness of their importance.

The appointment also reflects political ties. Godett pointed to longstanding connections with the minister’s family and highlighted ideological similarities between parties such as FOL and MFK, both of which he described as rooted in social-democratic principles.

Godett served as a member of Parliament until last year for KEM and has previously held various political roles, including within FOL.

His appointment comes with a controversial background. In 2004, Godett was convicted in a major fraud case involving government-owned companies, receiving a prison sentence of approximately 15 months, partly suspended, for charges including fraud, forgery, and bribery.

Despite this, Godett emphasized that he is committed to contributing to the country’s development through his new advisory role.
