Fire at Malpais Landfill Under Control, Selikor Keeps Additional Safety Measures in Place

Local, | By Correspondent September 16, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – A fire at the tire disposal area of the Malpais landfill has been brought completely under control, allowing customers to once again use the access road and designated disposal areas normally, Selikor announced.

Despite the improvement in the situation, the waste management company said it remains on alert and will continue implementing additional safety measures at the landfill.

As of September 15, 2026, people who are not visiting Malpais specifically to dispose of waste will no longer be permitted to enter the landfill grounds. The restriction will remain in effect until further notice.

Only customers arriving to dispose of waste will be allowed onto the property. They must remain within the designated areas and follow instructions provided by Selikor personnel at the entrance and elsewhere on the landfill grounds.

The measures were introduced following the fire at the landfill's tire storage area. Although the blaze has now been fully contained, Selikor said the restrictions are necessary to maintain general safety at the site.

The company is asking all customers visiting Malpais to strictly follow instructions from landfill personnel to ensure their own safety and that of employees and other users.

Selikor thanked the public for its cooperation and understanding and said the additional restrictions will remain in place until a new announcement is issued.
