Fire at Kaya Telekomunikashon Under Control, Smoke Nuisance Continues

Local, Police, | By Correspondent May 13, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Brantweer Curaçao has brought the fire that broke out on Monday, May 12, at Kaya Telekomunikashon under control. Firefighters are expected to continue operations for several more hours before resuming work again tomorrow morning.

Although there is no longer any immediate fire danger, heavy smoke continues to cause nuisance in the areas of Rooi Santu and surrounding neighborhoods.

According to the Fire Department, the situation is currently under control and there is no direct danger to residents.

The fire involved four of the fifteen containers located on a property at Kaya Telekomunikashon 180. The containers reportedly stored various chemical materials, including swimming pool cleaning products and gas cylinders used for filling forklifts.

Authorities said the presence of those materials made the situation particularly dangerous because of the risk of explosions and toxic smoke.

To allow firefighting and investigation activities to continue safely, parts of the area surrounding Kaya Telekomunikashon will remain temporarily closed.

Authorities are asking the public to follow official instructions and use alternative routes whenever possible.

Even though the fire has been contained, smoke nuisance may continue during the coming hours.

The Fire Department is advising residents in Rooi Santu and nearby areas to keep doors and windows closed if they remain at home and have not been evacuated.

Residents are also being asked to keep pets indoors for the time being and avoid using air conditioning systems to prevent outside air from entering homes.

Authorities continue to urge the public to monitor official communication channels for updates and further information.
