WILLEMSTAD – The upcoming arrival of the international film festival Filmapalooza to Curaçao in 2027 is being viewed as more than a one-time event, with organizers and filmmakers emphasizing its potential to transform the island’s local film industry.

According to those involved, the real value of hosting the global festival lies in the opportunities it creates for Curaçao’s filmmakers to connect with international networks and raise production standards.

Insights from the Curaçao delegation that attended Filmapalooza 2026 in Lisbon highlight what is at stake. Local filmmakers and organizers participated in workshops, networking events and screenings featuring more than 150 short films from around the world, gaining firsthand exposure to global practices and expectations.

City Co-Producer Melissa Verboeket said the international exchange offers valuable perspective on the level at which the global industry operates and what is required for Curaçao to compete at that level.

Film Commissioner Eloise van Wickeren described securing Filmapalooza for Curaçao as the result of years of effort. While calling it a milestone for the sector, she stressed that the real challenge lies in how effectively local filmmakers capitalize on the opportunities it presents.

The festival is expected to bring international attention to Curaçao, while also providing local creators with access to knowledge, partnerships and exposure that could accelerate the development of the island’s creative industry.

As preparations begin, stakeholders are increasingly focused on ensuring that the long-term benefits extend beyond the event itself, positioning Curaçao as a growing player in the global film landscape.
