FIFA Investigating VAR Official Over Controversial Gesture Before Germany-Curaçao Match

Local, International, | By Correspondent June 15, 2026

HOUSTON – FIFA has reportedly launched an investigation into a controversial hand gesture made by a video assistant referee (VAR) official before Curaçao's historic World Cup opener against Germany, an incident that has drawn international attention and sparked debate across the football world.

The controversy centers on Australian referee Shaun Evans, who was serving as a VAR supervisor during Germany's 7-1 victory over Curaçao in Houston. During a television broadcast showing the VAR team before kickoff, Evans was seen making an inverted "OK" hand gesture while standing behind fellow officials. The image quickly circulated on social media and prompted calls for FIFA to investigate the incident.

The gesture has become controversial in recent years because it has at times been adopted by extremist and white supremacist groups as a symbol. However, organizations that monitor hate symbols have also cautioned that the hand sign continues to be widely used in non-political contexts and that its meaning depends heavily on the circumstances in which it is displayed.

According to multiple international media reports, FIFA opened inquiries shortly after the footage emerged. The world football governing body has not yet publicly announced the outcome of its review.

The incident has also attracted the attention of Fare Network, FIFA's anti-discrimination monitoring partner. The organization described the gesture as resembling a symbol associated with far-right extremism and called for Evans to be removed from further duties at the tournament pending the investigation.

At this stage, it remains unclear whether Evans intended any political message or whether the gesture had another meaning. No evidence has been publicly presented regarding his intentions, and FIFA has not announced any disciplinary measures.

The controversy emerged during what was otherwise a historic day for Curaçao football. The match against Germany marked the Blue Wave's first-ever appearance at a FIFA World Cup. Despite the 7-1 defeat, Curaçao celebrated a milestone when Livano Comenencia scored the nation's first World Cup goal.

The investigation adds an unexpected off-field storyline to Curaçao's World Cup debut, although the incident is unrelated to the performance of either team on the field.

FIFA is expected to determine whether any further action is warranted after reviewing the circumstances surrounding the gesture and the context in which it was made.
