FIFA Clears World Cup Official Evans Following Investigation Into Controversial Gesture

WILLEMSTAD – FIFA has decided not to take disciplinary action against World Cup officiating team member Shaun Evans following an investigation into a controversial hand gesture that sparked debate during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The controversy emerged after Evans was seen making a hand gesture before Curaçao's historic World Cup opener against Germany. Images and video clips of the incident quickly circulated on social media, prompting calls for FIFA to investigate whether the gesture violated the organization's anti-discrimination regulations.

Following a review of the case, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee concluded that there was no evidence that Evans had breached FIFA regulations.

As a result, Evans will continue serving as a member of the officiating team for the remainder of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In comments following FIFA's decision, Evans said the controversy did not reflect who he is as a person.

He acknowledged that the gesture could be interpreted in different ways by different people but insisted that he did not make it consciously or with any deliberate intention to offend.

The incident attracted international attention because the gesture has, in certain contexts, been associated with extremist groups, although it is also widely used in everyday situations without political meaning.

FIFA's decision effectively closes the matter and allows Evans to continue his World Cup duties without further disciplinary measures.

The controversy surfaced during what was otherwise a historic occasion for Curaçao. The match against Germany marked the Blue Wave's first-ever appearance at a FIFA World Cup, with midfielder Livano Comenencia scoring the nation's first goal on football's biggest stage.

With FIFA now having completed its investigation, attention is expected to return to the action on the field as the tournament continues.
