WILLEMSTAD – With the appointment of Fred Rutten as the new head coach, Curaçao has not opted for a so-called “big name,” but rather for a coach who fits the team well. That was emphasized by Gilbert Martina, president of the Curaçao Football Federation (FFK), during a press conference on Wednesday.
According to Martina, Rutten brings experience, structure and a clear vision that align with the current needs of the national team. Since his appointment, Rutten has already analyzed all matches played since June 2024 and has identified several areas for improvement.
As Curaçao prepares for World Cup qualification, Rutten intends to place strong emphasis on the physical condition of the players. To that end, a high-level fitness coach will be added to his technical staff. In addition, a tactical specialist will be brought in to further strengthen the team’s game plan and on-field organization.
Despite the changes in leadership, the ambition remains unchanged. Curaçao is aiming to reach the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup, a goal that reflects the confidence within the federation following the team’s historic recent progress. Rutten is scheduled to officially present his first squad on March 6.
Beyond the sporting side, the FFK is also working on expanding the Blue Wave brand. Preparations are underway for the opening of the Blue Wave Shop at Sambil. The store will offer a range of national team merchandise, including keychains, mugs, mini jerseys, scarves, and official training and match kits.
With a new coach, an unchanged World Cup ambition, and growing fan engagement through merchandise, the Curaçao football federation is positioning itself for the next phase in the Blue Wave’s development.
