WILLEMSTAD – The Federation of Savings and Credit Cooperatives Curaçao (Fekoskan) used a courtesy visit to Governor Mauritsz de Kort on Tuesday to highlight the role cooperatives can play in economic development and affordable housing on Curaçao. The visit took place as part of the federation’s 65th anniversary celebrations, according to a government press release.

During the meeting, discussions focused on targeted financing for affordable housing projects and the contribution accessible credit can make to sustainable socioeconomic development on the island.

According to Fekoskan, cooperatives can offer a more inclusive alternative within the economy while also strengthening Curaçao’s economic resilience. The organization emphasized that cooperative financing models can help broaden access to financial services for residents who may face difficulties obtaining traditional financing.

Fekoskan also presented its future vision for the sector. Key priorities include strengthening the cooperative movement, stimulating entrepreneurship, increasing youth involvement and expanding cooperation with local and international partners.

The federation’s anniversary comes at a time when affordable housing and access to financing remain important social and economic issues on Curaçao. Fekoskan argues that stronger cooperative structures could help support broader community development and create more opportunities for sustainable economic participation.
