WILLEMSTAD – A father and his son were arrested Thursday following a violent incident at the Curaçao Juvenile Justice Institution (JJIC) that left several people injured and caused damage to property at the facility.

According to preliminary information, the father arrived at the institution seeking to speak with a youth residing at the facility. He was accompanied by another son, who allegedly exited the vehicle carrying a baseball bat.

Authorities say the young man subsequently attacked a security officer and caused extensive damage within the institution's grounds. Several individuals were injured during the disturbance.

The incident prompted a large-scale response from law enforcement. Multiple police units, including members of the arrest team, were dispatched to the scene to restore order and secure the facility.

Ambulances were also called to provide medical assistance to the injured.

Police confirmed that both the father and the son were taken into custody. Authorities stated that the situation has since been brought under control.

The incident comes just hours after Justice Minister Shalten Hato condemned an act of violence and vandalism at the juvenile detention center, emphasizing that security, order, and stability are essential for the rehabilitation and care of young people housed at the institution.

Police have not yet released details regarding the number of people injured or the extent of the damage. The investigation remains ongoing.
