For the protection and continuation of local crafts

WILLEMSTAD – On April 15 and 18, Farm to Crafts is organizing a workshop in which participants will be introduced to the craft of chair weaving. During these hands-on sessions, which take place from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, participants will learn how to weave a chair seat or backrest using bamboo fibers.

The workshop will be led by master weaver Felix Etienne, who has been active in this craft for many years. With his background as a creative therapist and teacher, he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience that he passionately passes on to a new generation. Those interested can choose between the session on Wednesday, April 15, or the workshop on Saturday, April 18.

Chair weaving is a traditional craft that is still in demand, yet knowledge of it is becoming increasingly scarce on Curaçao. At the same time, many people still have chairs or rattan furniture at home that need repair, without knowing how or where this can be done. With this workshop, Farm to Crafts aims to contribute to preserving this craftsmanship while sharing practical skills.

The workshop is part of the broader Farm to Crafts project, which focuses on establishing new local production chains. By processing residual materials from banana cultivation, including stems, into fibers, these are transformed into sustainable, high-quality design products. In doing so, the project bridges the gap between agriculture, craftsmanship, and design on Curaçao.

The cost is 50 guilders per person. This includes refreshments and materials. Registration is mandatory due to the required preparation and materials. Those interested can sign up by emailing hello@farmtocrafts.com. Be sure to register early, as the number of places is limited.
