Fans Launch Campaign for Elroy Room Statue After World Cup Heroics

Local, International, | By Press release June 22, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – What started as a joke by Curaçao goalkeeper Elroy Room is now turning into a fan-driven campaign to permanently honor the national team captain with a statue on the island.

Following Room’s historic performance against Ecuador at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a supporter initiative has been launched to raise funds for a monument celebrating the goalkeeper's contribution to Curaçao football and national pride.

Room became the undisputed hero of Curaçao’s memorable 0-0 draw against Ecuador, producing a remarkable series of saves to keep his team in the match. His outstanding display earned him the official Player of the Match award and helped secure Curaçao’s first-ever World Cup point.

According to supporters behind the campaign, Room recorded 15 saves during the match, one of the most impressive goalkeeping performances ever seen at a World Cup. For Curaçao, the smallest nation ever to qualify for the tournament, the result has already become a defining moment in the country's sporting history.

The campaign, however, is about more than football.

After the final whistle, Room held up a shirt in memory of his late former teammate Jairzinho Pieter, a gesture that touched many people across the island and among the Curaçaoan diaspora. Supporters say the emotional tribute highlighted the deeper meaning behind Room's performance.

“Room wasn’t just playing for himself,” said Jayden, the initiator of the campaign. “He was playing for the entire island, for everyone who believes in Curaçao and for those who are no longer with us. His joke about deserving a statue felt to many fans like something that should actually become reality.”

The idea emerged after Room jokingly suggested following the match that he might deserve a statue on Curaçao. What began as a lighthearted comment quickly gained traction among supporters who believe the goalkeeper deserves a lasting tribute.

A fundraising campaign has now been launched through Club-Meister, allowing supporters, football fans and Curaçaoans around the world to contribute toward the project.

According to the organizers, the proposed monument would not simply honor a single match or individual achievement, but would symbolize perseverance, national pride and the belief that a small island can accomplish extraordinary things on the world stage.

“A statue for Room is not just a statue for one man,” Jayden said. “It is a statue for every Curaçaoan who was ever told they were too small to dream big. Let’s turn his joke into a monument.”

Whether the campaign ultimately succeeds remains to be seen, but the initiative reflects the excitement and pride that Room's World Cup heroics have inspired throughout Curaçao and among supporters around the globe.
