WILLEMSTAD – Rob Jetten was taken to a hospital on Bonaire on Tuesday morning after suffering an allergic reaction caused by being stung or pricked while swimming.
According to reports, the Dutch prime minister did not sustain serious injuries, although it remains unclear exactly what caused the incident.
The hospital visit forced adjustments to Jetten’s official program during his visit to Bonaire and Aruba.
As a result, the prime minister canceled a scheduled visit to the Public Entity for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries on Bonaire.
Environmental organization Greenpeace had planned a protest there in response to the Dutch government’s decision to appeal a court ruling ordering the Netherlands to do more to protect Bonaire against climate change.
Jetten also missed a planned breakfast meeting with Bonaire’s Executive Council because of the medical situation.
Additional adjustments were reportedly made to parts of his program on Aruba, where the Dutch prime minister was scheduled to travel after concluding his visit to Bonaire.
The incident occurred during a broader visit to the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom, where regional cooperation, climate policy, governance, and economic issues are among the key topics on the agenda.
