WILLEMSTAD – HNLMS Groningen has arrived in Curaçao to begin its deployment as the Dutch Navy’s station ship in the Caribbean, taking over the role from HNLMS Friesland after four months of operations in the region.

The patrol vessel arrived on the island on Thursday and will spend the coming months carrying out a range of maritime security missions throughout the Caribbean, according to the Dutch Ministry of Defence.

As the Kingdom’s station ship, Groningen will be responsible for supporting maritime surveillance, law enforcement operations, and the fight against illegal activities such as drug trafficking and human smuggling. The vessel will operate in close cooperation with the Dutch Caribbean Coast Guard and regional partners.

Defence officials said the continued presence of a naval station ship contributes significantly to safety and stability in the Caribbean region. The ships regularly participate in counter-narcotics operations, border security missions, and search-and-rescue activities.

In addition to its security responsibilities, HNLMS Groningen is also prepared to provide emergency assistance during the Atlantic hurricane season. The vessel can be deployed rapidly in the event of natural disasters affecting islands across the Caribbean.

To support its operations, the ship carries an NH90 maritime helicopter capable of conducting aerial surveillance, reconnaissance, transport missions, and search-and-rescue operations. The helicopter enhances the vessel’s operational reach and effectiveness during maritime patrols and emergency responses.

The arrival of Groningen ensures the continued presence of a Dutch naval asset in the Caribbean at a time when regional authorities remain focused on combating transnational crime and preparing for potential hurricane-related emergencies.

HNLMS Friesland, which previously served as the station ship, completed its Caribbean deployment after supporting a variety of maritime security and law enforcement operations over the past four months.
