Dutch MP Who Criticized Caribbean Islands Remains Silent During IPKO Meeting

Local, The Netherlands, | By Correspondent June 9, 2026

THE HAGUE – Dutch MP Elmar Vlottes, whose remarks about the Caribbean countries of the Kingdom sparked controversy earlier this year, drew attention during the Interparliamentary Kingdom Consultation (IPKO) for a different reason: his near-total silence during discussions with parliamentarians from Curaçao, Aruba and Sint Maarten.

Vlottes, a member of the Dutch Party for Freedom (PVV), became known in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom after comments suggesting that the islands were not worth even one euro. The statement generated criticism among politicians and residents in Curaçao, Aruba and Sint Maarten, where many viewed the remarks as dismissive and disrespectful.

Despite the controversy surrounding his comments, Vlottes reportedly played only a minimal role during the IPKO meetings held in The Hague. Participants noted that the Dutch parliamentarian was rarely visible during discussions and made little to no contribution to debates involving Kingdom relations and cooperation.

Observers pointed out that the consultation offered an opportunity for Vlottes to explain or defend the position that had attracted attention throughout the Caribbean. However, according to those present, the MP did not actively participate in discussions on the issues affecting the islands.

The contrast between his earlier public remarks and his limited participation during face-to-face meetings with Caribbean parliamentarians did not go unnoticed.

The issue was indirectly referenced during one of the panel discussions when Curaçao MP Quincy Girigorie criticized what he described as a lack of understanding in Dutch politics regarding the realities faced by the Caribbean countries. Girigorie specifically referred to comments made by a Dutch parliamentarian who had suggested the islands were "not even worth one euro," arguing that such attitudes undermine efforts to build stronger cooperation within the Kingdom.

IPKO brought together delegations from Curaçao, Aruba, Sint Maarten and the Netherlands to discuss cooperation, constitutional issues, climate policy, migration, reform programs and other Kingdom-related matters.

While many of the discussions focused on improving mutual understanding and strengthening relationships between the four countries, the controversy surrounding Vlottes' earlier comments remained a topic of conversation among several Caribbean delegates.

The incident highlighted ongoing sensitivities within Kingdom relations, where political rhetoric in the Netherlands can sometimes have significant repercussions in the Caribbean countries.

For some participants, the episode underscored the importance of direct dialogue. Statements made from a distance often sound different when the people affected by them are sitting across the same table.
