Local, | By Press release April 24, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – A Dutch historical novel exploring a little-known chapter of American history has taken an important international step with the release of its English-language edition.

De herovering van New York by author Lars de Brabander has been published in English under the title Devil on the Hudson by an American publisher, making the book accessible to a global readership.

Set in the seventeenth century, the novel focuses on the Dutch reconquest of New York in 1673, a brief but significant moment during colonial rivalries between European powers. The story blends historical fact with fiction, offering readers insight into a period shaped by trade, power struggles, and geopolitical competition.

What sets Devil on the Hudson apart is its multi-layered storytelling. The narrative unfolds through the perspectives of historical figures such as Peter Stuyvesant and Cornelis Evertsen de Jongste, alongside fictional and lesser-known voices like Kofi Kumase. This approach adds human and moral depth to the historical events, moving beyond traditional retellings.

With the English edition, De Brabander brings renewed attention to a largely overlooked connection between Dutch and American history. The publication also highlights the broader historical ties between the Netherlands and the United States, while underscoring the relevance of such stories in understanding the foundations of the modern world.

Devil on the Hudson is now available on more than 50 platforms, including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Apple Books, in e-book, paperback, and hardcover formats.
