Dutch Government Rejects World Cup Boycott, Highlights Curaçao’s Historic Qualification

International, The Netherlands, | By Correspondent April 21, 2026

THE HAGUE – The Dutch government has rejected calls to boycott this summer’s FIFA World Cup and confirmed it plans to attend the tournament, according to a statement by Minister Mirjam Sterk.

The response follows a petition initiated by journalist Teun van de Keuken and supported by activist group DeGoedeZaak, which urged the Netherlands not to participate in the World Cup. The petition argues that taking part would indirectly support the international image of U.S. President Donald Trump and criticizes policies of the American government.

Minister Sterk stated that the decision on participation lies solely with the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB), emphasizing that the government does not play a role in determining whether the national team competes. She added that there is no reason for the cabinet to intervene.

The government also indicated that it is standard practice for an official delegation to attend major international football tournaments, and that this tradition will continue during the upcoming World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

In its response, the cabinet highlighted that the tournament holds special significance for the Kingdom of the Netherlands this year, as Curaçao has qualified for the World Cup for the first time in its history.

The decision underscores the government’s position that sporting participation should remain separate from political disputes, while also recognizing the historic moment for Curaçao on the global football stage.
