Dutch Foreign Minister Says Situation in Venezuela More Stable, No Direct Threat to ABC Islands

WILLEMSTAD – Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen says the situation in Venezuela is currently more stable than it was several months ago and that there is no direct security threat to the ABC islands.

In responses to parliamentary questions submitted by the Dutch political party JA21, Berendsen stated that security risks for the Kingdom of the Netherlands have decreased in recent months.

According to the minister, the United States is now working with a three-phase plan aimed at helping Venezuela recover economically and rebuild infrastructure, particularly within the oil sector.

At the same time, Berendsen warned that concerns about democracy and the rule of law in Venezuela remain unresolved.

According to the Dutch minister, the country’s much-needed democratic transition is still lagging behind. He stated that only after democratic institutions and the rule of law are restored can Venezuela create sustainable long-term economic opportunities.

Earlier this month, Berendsen met in The Hague with Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil. During those talks, both sides reportedly emphasized the importance of good neighborly relations and tourism links with Aruba, Curaçao, and Bonaire.

Venezuela is also said to be interested in attracting Dutch investments in sectors such as agriculture and energy.

Berendsen added that the Dutch government remains in continuous consultation with the governments of Curaçao and Aruba regarding developments in Venezuela and the broader regional strategy.

The comments reflect a noticeable shift in tone compared to earlier periods when discussions surrounding Venezuela focused mainly on migration, sanctions, border security, and regional instability.

The ABC islands continue to closely monitor developments in Venezuela because of their geographic proximity, economic ties, tourism connections, and energy interests linked to the South American country.
