DUO Offers Student Loan Repayment Assistance Across Dutch Caribbean Ahead of 2027

Local, Caribbean, The Netherlands, | By Correspondent October 23, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – The Dutch Education Executive Agency (DUO) is offering assistance to former students throughout the Dutch Caribbean as they prepare to receive notifications about their student loan repayment obligations for 2027. The agency is urging borrowers to carefully review their monthly repayment amounts, as some may qualify for reduced payments or even a temporary repayment amount of zero, depending on their income.

During November, individuals with outstanding DUO student loans will receive notifications specifying how much they are expected to repay each month in 2027. DUO emphasizes that borrowers should verify whether the calculated amount accurately reflects their financial circumstances.

In cases where the monthly repayment amount has been calculated without considering the borrower's income, former students can submit their income information to request an adjustment.

According to DUO, providing this information could prevent borrowers from paying more than necessary. Depending on their earnings, their monthly repayment obligation for 2027 could be reduced to zero.

The agency recommends that former students bring their income statements for 2024 and 2025 when visiting its service offices for assistance with repayment calculations.

Assistance for Borrowers Experiencing Financial Difficulties

DUO recognizes that repaying student loans can sometimes present financial challenges, particularly for former students who experience changes in income or fall behind on their payments.

The agency is encouraging borrowers who are struggling with repayment obligations, have accumulated arrears, or are uncertain about their outstanding balances to seek assistance.

DUO employees will be available to explain repayment requirements, review individual circumstances, and discuss available options.

Assistance will also be provided to borrowers who wish to make repayments in local currency or who are experiencing difficulties accessing the Mijn DUO online portal.

The objective is to ensure that former students better understand their financial obligations and the steps they can take to manage their student debt.

DUO Announces November Service Visits Across the Caribbean

As part of its outreach program, DUO will provide in-person assistance at several locations throughout the Dutch Caribbean.

The agency will visit Bonaire from November 2 to 6, followed by Aruba from November 9 to 20 and Sint Maarten from November 23 to 27.

DUO representatives will also be available in Saba on November 30 and December 1, and in Sint Eustatius on December 2 and 3.

In Curaçao, DUO has maintained a service office since April 2025, allowing residents to receive assistance locally over an extended period rather than depending exclusively on temporary visits.

Former students are encouraged to consult DUO's official website for current office locations, opening hours, and appointment information.

Information Sessions for Students Planning to Study in the Netherlands

In addition to assisting former students with loan repayments, DUO will organize information sessions for prospective students who intend to pursue higher education in the Netherlands.

The sessions, which will also welcome parents, are scheduled to take place in Bonaire, Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten.

DUO is organizing the meetings in cooperation with higher education institutions in the Netherlands.

During these sessions, prospective students will receive information about studying in the Netherlands, including the preparations necessary before departure.

Caribbean students who are already studying in the Netherlands will also share their personal experiences, offering practical insights into student life and the challenges of transitioning to higher education abroad.

The initiative is intended to help students and their families make informed decisions and prepare for the academic, financial, and practical aspects of studying overseas.

Borrowers Encouraged to Review Their Financial Information

DUO is emphasizing that former students should not automatically accept their 2027 repayment amounts without checking whether their income has been taken into account.

For borrowers whose financial circumstances have changed, submitting the appropriate income information could significantly reduce their monthly obligations.

Additional information about repayment calculations, income submissions, service office schedules, and upcoming information sessions is available through the official DUO website at duo.nl/bezoekcariben.

The agency encourages borrowers to seek assistance early to avoid unnecessary financial pressure and ensure that their repayment arrangements accurately reflect their circumstances.
