Local, Health, | By Correspondent September 11, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Dr. Karel Taams has announced that he will retire in December 2026, a departure that is expected to reduce the number of surgical procedures that can be performed as his retirement approaches.

Taams, a medical specialist in Curaçao, will gradually reduce his activities in the coming months before ending his work completely in December.

According to information surrounding his planned retirement, the number of operations performed will already begin to decline as he winds down his practice.

His departure could have consequences for patients requiring procedures within his specialty, particularly if sufficient replacement capacity is not available before December.

No information has yet been provided about who will take over Taams’ patients or whether another specialist will be recruited to compensate for the reduction in surgical capacity.

The announcement also raises questions about continuity of care and possible waiting times once Taams stops performing operations altogether.

Taams is expected to continue working on a reduced basis during the remainder of 2026 before officially retiring in December.
