As a proud Yu di Kòrsou (Child of Curaçao) and social worker, I celebrate the Blue Wave with all my heart. But amid the excitement surrounding our national team's historic achievements, one important question must be asked: Who will truly benefit from the global attention Curaçao is now receiving?
The slogan "Now You See Us" is a powerful expression of identity, recognition and pride. It reminds the world that Curaçao is here. But taking advantage of this moment depends not only on what the government can do for us, but also on how willing each of us is to serve and strengthen the opportunities this new visibility creates.
At the same time, we must recognize that visibility also brings risks if we fail to protect what belongs to us. Visibility is not the same as sovereignty.
As Curaçao gains international exposure, we face several challenges that deserve serious attention. Money generated through tourism does not always remain on the island. Home prices are becoming increasingly unaffordable for local families. Land ownership is becoming more difficult for Curaçaoans as property values are driven by buyers with stronger currencies such as the euro and the U.S. dollar. Meanwhile, our economy continues to rely too heavily on tourism alone.
If we fail to act, the same wave that is lifting us today could eventually overwhelm us.
For that reason, I urge the Government of Curaçao to take two concrete steps.
First, protect our land. The requirements for purchasing land in Curaçao should be tightened by introducing mandatory permits, minimum residency requirements and limits on foreign ownership. Our land and natural resources should remain primarily in the hands of the people of Curaçao.
Second, introduce a dedicated tourism tax. Revenue generated from such a tax should be allocated directly to three priorities: reducing the cost of living for those who need it most (40%), education (30%) and social welfare (30%). Annual public reporting should ensure full transparency and accountability.
The Blue Wave should carry everyone forward. No Child of Curaçao should be left struggling beneath it.
Today we celebrate an extraordinary national achievement, but the real victory will come when Curaçao's future creates opportunities for every Yu di Kòrsou.
With love, pride and responsibility for my country,
