Design for New Curaçao Courthouse Unchanged, Completion Expected in 2029

Local, | By Correspondent June 30, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – The project organization overseeing the renovation and expansion of the Courthouse of Justice in Curaçao has clarified that the design of the new judicial complex has not been changed, despite recent confusion over the number of new building wings included in the project.

The organization also confirmed that the renovated courthouse is expected to be completed in 2029, provided the project proceeds according to schedule.

The clarification follows questions raised after earlier project presentations referred to three new building wings, while more recent communications mention four wings.

According to the project organization, the apparent discrepancy stems solely from a different way of describing the development. The original reference to three wings referred to the three blue-colored sections shown on the architectural drawings. In the latest project update, a fourth building section has also been counted as part of the new construction.

Officials emphasized that this fourth section was not added to the design at a later stage. It has always been part of the project but differs from the other three wings in its architectural design, building materials and intended function.

The renovation project will preserve the courthouse's historic structure while replacing the non-historic additions with modern facilities designed to meet the needs of a contemporary judicial system.

As previously announced, demolition of the non-historic portions of the courthouse complex is scheduled to begin in July, marking the start of the project's construction phase.

Once completed, the renewed courthouse will feature modern workspaces, offices, meeting areas and multiple courtrooms while maintaining the historic character of one of Willemstad's most iconic public buildings. The project is also expected to improve security and accessibility for judges, staff, visitors and detainees.
