WILLESTAD - How does democracy function in practice? And what role does technology play in this? These questions are at the heart of the ‘Democracy in Practice’ workshop, taking place on November 9th. Initiated by the Chair of Democratic Representation (Leiden University), the workshop will feature researchers presenting the initial findings of their study.

Themes
The workshop focuses on three key topics. First, it explores insights into democratic representation, derived from an analysis of political party manifestos and interviews. Second, it examines how democracy in Curaçao functions—both on paper and in practice. Finally, it addresses the question: how can technology make politics in Curaçao more transparent and foster greater citizen participation?
Speakers
Wouter Veenendaal, Professor by Special Appointment of Kingdom Relations at Leiden University, will share his analysis of political party manifestos in Curaçao. Political scientist Miguel Goede will place Curaçao’s democracy within an international context. Globally, democracy is under pressure and subject to debate—driven, in part, by the rise of populism and the election of U.S. President Trump. Goede will discuss how democracy has evolved in Curaçao and the other islands, exploring the impact of these changes and what they mean for the future of our democracy.

Democracy in Practice
Consultant Joeri Oltheten will discuss democracy in practice by highlighting two initiatives: ‘Asamblea di Pueblo,’ a community project that allows residents to voice their opinions on issues that affect them, and an educational project called ‘Si ami tabata minpres’ (‘If I were Prime Minister’), which aims to engage primary school students with the political system. Researcher Pamela Jimenez Ablanque, affiliated with the Chair, will explore the relationship between technology and democracy. The evening will be moderated by social scientist
Renske Pin.
Interaction
This workshop follows the ‘Democracy Today & The Road Ahead’ seminar, which marked the launch of the Chair in Democratic Representation last year. The initial research findings will now be presented. The program allows ample space for audience interaction and invites participants to actively contribute to the dialogue. Everyone is welcome!
