Debate Education Foundation Discusses Youth Engagement and Citizenship With Governor

WILLEMSTAD – Giving young people a voice, encouraging critical thinking, and teaching respectful dialogue are central goals of the Debate Education Foundation (Debat.ed), whose representatives recently met with Mauritsz de Kort during an official audience.

During the meeting, the Governor received an overview of several initiatives and projects developed by Debat.ed to strengthen political and social engagement among young people on Curaçao.

Representing the organization were director Nathania Engelhardt, chairman Louis Martina, secretary Chris Everts, treasurer Iyo Rosa, and board member Irodice Cijntje-Copra.

According to the foundation, a large part of daily life for many young people now takes place online, where discussions on social media can quickly become polarized and opinions often clash without genuine listening or understanding.

Debat.ed says it aims to change that dynamic.

Through debate clubs and training programs, the organization teaches both young people and adults how to clearly express their opinions, think critically, and engage respectfully with differing viewpoints.

The foundation emphasizes that debate is not about “winning,” but about understanding one another.

By exploring the ideas and experiences of others, participants develop skills such as empathy, cooperation, self-confidence, and social resilience — qualities the organization says are essential for education, employment, and active participation in society.

Governor De Kort reportedly praised the work presented during the meeting and highlighted the importance of civic education and strengthening youth involvement on Curaçao.

Through its activities, Debat.ed says it hopes to help build a generation that not only has opinions, but also understands how to engage in respectful and constructive dialogue with others.
