WILLEMSTAD – Governor of Curaçao Mauritsz de Kort received a delegation from the National Slavery Museum (NSM) on Monday, August 31, for discussions on the museum’s development and the importance of incorporating Curaçao’s history and perspectives into its narrative.
The delegation included Franc Weerwind, former Dutch Minister for Legal Protection, currently acting mayor of Terneuzen and chairman of the NSM Supervisory Board; John Leerdam, director and executive board member of the museum; Peggy Brandon, head curator; and Ashley Chin, management adviser.
During the meeting, the delegation and the Governor discussed the development of the National Slavery Museum and its ambition to tell the broader story of the history of slavery throughout the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Particular attention was given to ensuring that the experiences and perspectives of Curaçao and the other Caribbean parts of the Kingdom are represented in the museum.
According to the Governor’s office, Curaçao’s experiences can make an important contribution to the ideas and narrative the museum seeks to develop. That narrative will address not only the history of oppression and injustice, but also resilience, resistance and creativity, as well as the continuing impact of slavery’s legacy on present-day society.
The National Slavery Museum aims to become a place for knowledge, awareness and dialogue while contributing to greater connection and a more equitable future.
