Curaçao’s Oil Strategy Remains Autonomous Amid Climate Debate

Local, The Netherlands, | By Correspondent April 8, 2026

THE HAGUE – Curaçao’s potential role as a hub for fossil fuel storage and transit remains a decision for the island’s own government, according to the Dutch cabinet, which has declined to take a position on the issue.

The response follows questions about whether Curaçao is positioning itself as a transit hub for Venezuelan oil. Dutch ministers stated that such economic choices are part of Curaçao’s autonomy and are not subject to approval or direction from The Hague.

They also emphasized that there are currently no indications that Curaçao is being structurally developed as a fossil fuel hub, describing recent activities as temporary in nature.

At the same time, the Dutch government reiterated its commitment to international climate goals and the transition away from fossil fuels, highlighting a potential tension between Curaçao’s economic opportunities and broader environmental objectives.
