WILLEMSTAD – Curaçaoan baseball sensation Jurrangelo Cijntje is moving one step closer to Major League Baseball after the St. Louis Cardinals promoted the talented switch-pitcher to the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds. The promotion places Cijntje at the highest level of the Cardinals’ minor league system and brings him within reach of a possible MLB debut.

The 23-year-old pitcher had been playing for the Double-A Springfield Cardinals before earning the promotion. Cijntje has continued to attract attention because of his rare ability to pitch effectively with both his left and right arm, making him one of the most unique prospects in professional baseball.

Cijntje’s latest performances helped strengthen his case for promotion. In early July, he delivered one of his strongest outings of the season, throwing six scoreless innings and striking out nine batters for Springfield. The Cardinals have ranked him among their top prospects, highlighting his potential as a future major league pitcher.

A historic baseball journey

Born in Curaçao, Cijntje has built a reputation as one of the most intriguing young talents in baseball. His ability to switch between pitching arms has made him a rare figure in the sport and has drawn international attention throughout his professional career.

Before joining the Cardinals organization, Cijntje was selected in the first round of the 2024 MLB Draft by the Seattle Mariners. In February 2026, he became part of a major trade that sent him to St. Louis as the Cardinals continued rebuilding their organization around young talent.

The Cardinals view Cijntje as an important piece of their future pitching plans. MLB’s prospect rankings list him among the organization’s leading young players, reflecting the high expectations surrounding his development.

From Curaçao to the doorstep of MLB

Cijntje’s promotion represents another milestone for Curaçaoan baseball, a country that has produced some of the biggest names in the sport, including Andruw Jones, Ozzie Albies, and Kenley Jansen.

For Curaçao, Cijntje’s rise is especially significant because of the uniqueness of his talent. A successful transition to the major leagues would make him one of the few players in modern baseball history capable of pitching at the highest level with both arms.

The move to Memphis means Cijntje will now compete against some of the best minor league talent in the country. A strong performance at the Triple-A level could put him in position for a call-up to St. Louis if the Cardinals believe he is ready.

For fans in Curaçao, the dream continues: seeing another island-born player take the final step toward Major League Baseball.
