WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao still has an outstanding interest-free loan from the Netherlands connected to the settlement of the failed Girobank, according to the proposed Dutch 2027 Kingdom Relations budget.
The loan has a 16-year term and carries an interest rate of zero percent.
According to the Dutch government’s loan overview, approximately XCG 8.2 million remains outstanding on the Girobank financing.
The Netherlands provided the loan to Curaçao to facilitate the settlement of the failed financial institution.
Repayment began on August 1, 2023. The arrangement also allows Curaçao to repay all or part of the loan ahead of schedule.
The Girobank loan is relatively small compared with Curaçao’s overall portfolio of loans from the Netherlands, which totals approximately €1.44 billion.
It is nevertheless notable because it carries no interest, unlike several of Curaçao’s more recent loans.
The Dutch budget shows interest rates across Curaçao’s loan portfolio ranging from zero percent to 3.62 percent.
