WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao is seeking to make its international representation more results-oriented, with greater emphasis on translating diplomatic contacts into education, investment and economic opportunities for the island.
Curaçao's Minister Plenipotentiary in Washington, D.C., Jérôme Beeldsnijder, says international attention should ultimately produce tangible benefits for Curaçao.
That approach can already be seen in Curaçao's efforts to strengthen relations with universities, government institutions and other organizations in the United States.
Earlier this year, the Curaçao government signed an agreement with the Florida Institute of Technology aimed at strengthening educational cooperation and improving opportunities for Curaçao students.
Curaçao is also examining ways to connect talented young athletes with American educational institutions, where combining university studies with competitive sports is common.
The broader strategy goes beyond education.
Beeldsnijder has indicated that international contacts should be directed toward areas that Curaçao will need for its future development, including aviation, maritime services, technology, healthcare, agriculture and renewable energy.
The approach represents an attempt to measure diplomacy less by the number of meetings held and more by what those relationships eventually produce.
Curaçao maintains international representation despite not being an independent state. Foreign affairs are formally a Kingdom responsibility, but Curaçao has considerable economic and administrative interests that require direct engagement with governments, institutions and businesses abroad.
The challenge will therefore be demonstrating concrete results over time, including scholarships obtained, partnerships established, investments attracted and professional opportunities created for Curaçao residents.
