WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao is set to expand its mental health support services with the opening of its first dedicated recovery center focused on emotional and psychological well-being.
The new facility, called Green Recovery Space, will officially open its doors on May 1 and aims to provide a safe and accessible environment for people seeking support in improving their mental well-being.
The initiative is being launched with support from ZonMw, the Dutch organization for health research and innovation, and is designed as a low-threshold support space for people experiencing temporary life challenges such as stress, emotional exhaustion or mental overload.
According to the organizers, the recovery center offers a place where individuals can pause, reflect, share experiences and gradually find direction again.
A key feature that makes Green Recovery Space different from traditional mental health services is its use of peer support specialists—people with lived experience in mental health struggles who have undergone specialized training to guide others through their recovery process.
The organization says this peer-led approach creates a stronger sense of understanding, trust and connection for those seeking support.
Recently, in partnership with Windesheim University of Applied Sciences, a second professional training program in experiential expertise at higher education level was completed, creating a growing group of trained specialists ready to support the community.
Visitors to the recovery center will be able to participate in workshops and training sessions focused on mental health awareness and personal resilience.
The center will also provide opportunities for social connection with others facing similar challenges, along with activities aimed at rebuilding structure, confidence and emotional balance.
The core philosophy of the recovery center is to help people strengthen their own inner resources and regain control over their lives.
Green Recovery Space is intended to complement Curaçao’s regular healthcare system rather than replace it.
The organization says it will actively collaborate with general practitioners, social welfare organizations and other local partners to create stronger referral pathways and broader support networks.
The official opening will take place on Friday, May 1, at Hòfi Kòrsou, located at Kaya Lobi 8 in Fuik.
The morning program will be reserved for invited guests and partner organizations, while the center will open its doors to the public from 1:00 p.m. for anyone interested in learning more about the new recovery space.
The launch marks a new step for Curaçao in strengthening community-based mental health support at a time when emotional well-being and stress-related challenges are receiving growing attention on the island.
