WILLEMSTAD – The Government of Curaçao plans to introduce a new emergency alert system, known as ALERTA, by the end of this year as part of a broader effort to strengthen the island's disaster preparedness.
The ALERTA system will automatically send emergency warnings and safety instructions directly to mobile phones during crises such as earthquakes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters. The alerts are intended to provide residents with timely information and guidance to help protect lives and improve emergency response.
According to the government, the introduction of ALERTA is one component of a wider strategy to enhance Curaçao's ability to prepare for and respond to emergencies.
In addition to the new warning system, the government is investing in public awareness campaigns, encouraging households to assemble emergency supply kits, expanding disaster preparedness training programs, recruiting additional personnel, and establishing a new operational emergency center.
Officials say these measures are designed to improve coordination and ensure the island is better equipped to respond quickly and effectively when disasters occur. The government expects the ALERTA system to become operational before the end of the year.
