KANSAS CITY – Curaçao produced one of the biggest surprises of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Saturday, holding favored Ecuador to a scoreless 0-0 draw in front of nearly 69,000 spectators in Kansas City.

The result earned Dick Advocaat's side a valuable point and further demonstrated that the Caribbean nation can compete with some of the world's strongest footballing countries.

From the opening whistle, Curaçao faced intense pressure from the South American side. Ecuador nearly took the lead in the third minute when veteran striker Enner Valencia broke through on goal, but Curaçao goalkeeper Elroy Room made an outstanding save to deny the early opportunity.

Despite Ecuador's dominance in possession, Curaçao refused to be pinned back entirely. The team created several dangerous counterattacks during the first half, with Tahith Chong and Juninho Bacuna causing problems for the Ecuadorian defense. Ecuador struggled at times to break through Curaçao's disciplined and compact defensive structure.

Room emerged as the hero of the evening as the match progressed. The experienced goalkeeper produced a series of crucial saves, including a dangerous header and several attempts from Ecuador following corner kicks. His performance kept Curaçao firmly in the contest throughout the ninety minutes.

The second half saw Ecuador increase the pressure, but Curaçao also created some of the best chances of the match. Around the hour mark, Leandro Bacuna, Livano Comenencia and Jurgen Locadia all had opportunities to put Curaçao ahead. However, none of the chances found the back of the net.

The final stages of the match were filled with tension as Ecuador pushed forward in search of a winner. Curaçao's defense stood firm, although Ecuador came agonizingly close when an effort struck the crossbar. Deep into stoppage time, Ecuadorian players appealed passionately for a penalty following a chaotic moment inside the box, but the referee waved play on.

After five minutes of added time, the final whistle sparked celebrations among the Curaçao players and supporters, who recognized the significance of the result.

The draw represents another historic milestone for Curaçao on football's biggest stage. Holding Ecuador scoreless for ninety minutes highlighted the team's defensive discipline, determination and growing confidence under Advocaat.

With a valuable point secured, Curaçao now turns its attention to its next World Cup challenge against Ivory Coast. Following Saturday's impressive performance, belief within the squad is likely to be stronger than ever as the island nation continues its remarkable World Cup journey.
