SAN JOSÉ – Curaçao produced one of the most remarkable comebacks in its football history Thursday night, overturning a three-goal halftime deficit to defeat Costa Rica 4-3 on its own soil in a spectacular start to the new Concacaf Nations League campaign.
After making history at the FIFA World Cup, the Blue Wave showed that its remarkable rise in international football is far from over.

Curaçao appeared to be heading toward a difficult defeat after going into halftime trailing Costa Rica by three goals. Playing away from home and facing a Costa Rican side seemingly in complete control, the situation looked bleak.
What followed in the second half was extraordinary.
Dick Advocaat's team scored four goals in a span of just 20 minutes to completely reverse the match and leave the home crowd stunned.
The Dutch coach's substitutions proved decisive. Tahith Chong, Kenji Gorré and Jordi Paulina all entered the match from the bench and went on to play central roles in Curaçao's comeback.
Gorré scored twice, while Paulina contributed a goal and two assists. Chong added another goal as the three substitutes transformed the match.
Instead of accepting what appeared to be an inevitable defeat, Curaçao attacked Costa Rica with renewed intensity and gradually erased the three-goal deficit before completing the 4-3 turnaround.
The victory carries additional significance because it came in Curaçao's first competitive match since its historic World Cup campaign.
At the World Cup, Curaçao became the smallest country by population ever to participate in the tournament. The Blue Wave also scored against Germany and earned a historic point against Ecuador.
Thursday night's performance demonstrated that the team has returned from the World Cup with the confidence to compete against established football nations in the Concacaf region.
It also provided an ideal beginning to Advocaat's new cycle with the national team.
The 78-year-old recently agreed to remain as Curaçao's national coach, with qualification for the 2027 Concacaf Gold Cup now the principal objective.
The Nations League is crucial to that ambition, making the three points collected away against Costa Rica particularly valuable.
For Curaçao, however, this was more than three points.
Coming back from 3-0 down to win 4-3 away from home provided another unforgettable chapter in what has become an extraordinary period for Curaçao football.
A country of roughly 155,000 people that only recently celebrated its first appearance on football's biggest stage is continuing to demonstrate that its World Cup qualification was not the end of the story.
On Thursday night, the Blue Wave was three goals down.
