WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao has still not formally approved its annual financial accounts beyond 2018, leaving years of public finances without parliamentary accountability, the College financieel toezicht Curaçao and Sint Maarten (Cft) notes.
Although draft accounts for 2019 through 2024 are reportedly ready, none have been formally adopted by the Curaçao Parliament. According to the Cft, this means the legislature has not been able to properly assess whether budgetary rules were met in recent years.
The watchdog urges the government to prioritize clearing this backlog as a matter of urgency. Without approved annual accounts, it remains impossible to definitively determine compliance with fiscal norms, including the central budget rule.
The lack of approved accounts also hampers proper oversight of debt, investments and long-term financial commitments.
