Curaçao set for expanded air links with Ecuador and Switzerland under new Open Skies agreements

THE HAGUE – Curaçao is expected to benefit from expanded air connectivity with Ecuador and Switzerland after the Kingdom Council of Ministers approved two new aviation agreements aimed at liberalizing flight operations to and from the island.

The so-called “Open Skies” agreements remove restrictions on the number of flights, airlines and flight frequencies, creating more room for new routes and increased competition between carriers.

According to the Kingdom Council of Ministers, the agreements are designed to strengthen trade, tourism and investment flows between Curaçao and both countries.

Under the new arrangements, airlines from Ecuador and Switzerland will have greater commercial freedom to operate flights to Curaçao, while carriers based on the island will also gain broader operational opportunities.

The agreements replace much older aviation treaties, some dating back decades. The existing agreement with Ecuador dates back to 1954, while the treaty with Switzerland goes even further back to 1949.

Dutch authorities say the updated agreements better reflect the realities of modern international aviation, where flexibility and market-driven route development play a central role.

For Curaçao, the move could create new opportunities to diversify its tourism markets and improve international accessibility.

Direct or expanded connections with Ecuador could strengthen ties with South America, particularly as regional trade and tourism flows continue to grow. Improved aviation access with Switzerland could also enhance Curaçao’s connectivity with Europe beyond the traditional Dutch market.

The agreements apply exclusively to Curaçao and do not cover Netherlands, Aruba or Sint Maarten.

Before taking effect, the treaties will be submitted to the Council of State of the Kingdom for advice. If no objections are raised, they can be approved through the standard silent approval process.

The new agreements form part of Curaçao’s broader strategy to strengthen its position as a regional aviation and tourism hub in the southern Caribbean.
