WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao wants to capitalize on growing interest from American educational institutions in the island’s young athletes to help more students gain access to higher education in the United States.
According to Curaçao’s Minister Plenipotentiary in the United States, Jérôme Beeldsnijder, American educational institutions are showing significant interest in young people who want to combine an academic education with competitive sports.
Beeldsnijder says that interest has increased following the performance of Curaçao’s national football team at the World Cup, which brought greater international attention to the island’s sporting talent.
It is not yet clear which American universities have specifically expressed interest in Curaçao athletes or whether any scholarships have already been offered.
Sports scholarships are widely used within the American higher education system. Universities can provide talented athletes with financial assistance covering expenses such as tuition and accommodation, generally through their athletic departments and coaching programs.
Route Already Used by Curaçao Athletes
For young Curaçao athletes, studying in the United States through sports is not a new route.
Organizations on the island already assist athletes with admission to American colleges and universities and with securing financial assistance. The Curaçao baseball federation has also previously worked with an American organization to connect young players with colleges and coaches.
Several Curaçao athletes have already used their sporting abilities to pursue education while competing at American colleges and universities.
Beeldsnijder believes the opportunities should be used more strategically, with athletic development connected to education and long-term career prospects.
Rather than viewing sporting talent exclusively in terms of achievements on the field, he sees sport as a potential gateway to academic opportunities that could give young Curaçaoans greater prospects beyond their athletic careers.
