WILLEMSTAD – The repair and restoration of the vessel Fernão de Magalhães has once again highlighted Curaçao’s importance within the regional and international maritime industry.

According to those involved at Damen Ship Repair Curaçao, the project demonstrates how Curaçao continues to position itself as a major center for ship maintenance and technical maritime services in the Caribbean region.

Images released from the project show the vessel being transformed from a heavily deteriorated condition into a fully restored ship. The work included steel repairs, coating applications and restoration of technical systems.

Employees involved in the operation emphasized that ship repair involves far more than technical expertise alone. According to Damen personnel, projects of this scale depend heavily on teamwork, experience and the ability to solve complex problems under pressure.

“What started as a heavily worn vessel became a symbol of teamwork, precision, resilience and trust,” one employee involved in the project stated.

The company stressed that behind every major repair operation stands a large team of specialized professionals working under demanding conditions to restore vessels safely and efficiently.

Damen Ship Repair Curaçao has long been considered one of the most important maritime maintenance facilities in the southern Caribbean. Its dry dock facilities serve commercial shipping, offshore operations and regional maritime activities.

Because of Curaçao’s strategic location between North and South America, the island continues to play an important role for vessels requiring maintenance, repairs and technical support while operating throughout the region.

Within the maritime sector, the restoration of the Fernão de Magalhães is being viewed as an example of the technical expertise available on Curaçao. Industry representatives say the project demonstrates that despite growing international competition, the island remains a relevant and capable player within the Caribbean maritime industry.
