Curaçao ready to introduce new vehicle license plates starting next week

Local, | By Correspondent March 25, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao will officially introduce a new series of vehicle license plates this week, with the launch ceremony scheduled for Friday and distribution set to begin on Monday.

The new plates have been organized and stored according to an alphabetical system and are ready for issuance. The Receiver’s Office will be responsible for distributing the plates to vehicle owners.

The introduction marks the first major update to Curaçao’s license plate system in more than a decade. The current plates were introduced in 2009, before Curaçao became a separate country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands in 2010. As a result, the existing plates have been in use for over 16 years.

Authorities indicated that the lifespan of the new plates will depend on several factors, including usage and future policy decisions. Curaçao currently has approximately 133,000 registered vehicles.

In total, 397,232 license plates have been produced, including sets for cars and single plates for motorcycles.

The rollout is expected to modernize the vehicle registration system and accommodate the island’s growing number of vehicles.
