Curaçao pushes for Caribbean-focused committee within Parlatino

Local, Caribbean, | By Correspondent March 26, 2026

PANAMA CITY – Curaçao has presented a proposal within the Latin American and Caribbean Parliament to establish a dedicated committee focused on Caribbean-specific issues, marking a potential step toward stronger regional representation.

The proposal was discussed during meetings of various committees and the Board of Directors held in Panama, according to Curaçao Parliament. These meetings are part of the lead-up to the 39th Ordinary Assembly of Parlatino, which brings together lawmakers from across Latin America and the Caribbean.

Parlatino, a regional inter-parliamentary body founded in 1964, serves as a platform for cooperation and dialogue on key regional challenges, with multiple permanent commissions covering areas such as economic development, human rights, and the environment.

However, Curaçao’s proposal aims to create a more focused platform within the organization to address issues unique to Caribbean territories, including small-island challenges, economic vulnerability, and regional cooperation.

If approved, the first meeting of the new committee is expected to take place in Curaçao in May, signaling the island’s intention to play a leading role in shaping Caribbean discussions within Parlatino.
